Message for Hillcrest High Families, Faculty, and Staff

Message for Hillcrest High Families, Faculty, and Staff

Hillcrest High Families, Faculty, and Staff,

The Tuscaloosa County Health Department has made us aware that a case of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, has been diagnosed in an individual who is part of Hillcrest High School. Under state health regulations, we are required to make you aware of this, and also to share with you the attached letter from the Alabama Department of Public Health. This letter gives you information about symptoms of pertussis, treatment for pertussis, and vaccination for pertussis. We have also included a fact sheet about pertussis. This letter is going out to everyone at Hillcrest High School, so this does not mean that your student has been exposed to pertussis. Anyone who is identified to have been a close contact of the confirmed case will be contacted directly.

Although the attached letter from the Department of Public Health says “cases of pertussis have been reported in your school,” we want to be clear that we have been notified of only one confirmed case. The purpose of this message is not to cause alarm. The purpose of this letter is to comply with health regulations and share information, so you can be aware of the symptoms of pertussis.

Please contact Hillcrest High administration or the Tuscaloosa County Health Department with any questions.

Sincerely,

Hillcrest High School Administration

Cindy O’Quinn, RN

TCSS Director of Nursing
